How to Plan a Daily Portion of Nuts

Günlük Kuruyemiş Porsiyonu Nasıl Planlanır?

Nuts pack a great deal of flavour into a small volume. That is why setting aside a portion in advance, rather than eating straight from the packet without noticing how much you have had, helps you build a more balanced routine. The aim here is not to memorise a fixed number, but to consider your personal needs, your pattern of meals and what is in the product together.

First decide what you are eating them for

Will you be having nuts as a snack, as an addition to breakfast, as a salad ingredient or as part of a post-exercise meal? If they are being added to more than one meal in the same day, it is worth reviewing the total amount. For example, walnuts at breakfast, mixed nuts as a snack and almonds in the evening salad may each seem small on their own, but they can add up by the end of the day.

Make the portion visible

Instead of putting the packet on the table, tip the amount you intend to eat into a small bowl and close the packet. For eating away from home, small reusable containers can be used in place of single-use bags. This approach makes it easier both to see how much you are having and to protect the rest of the product from air and moisture.

Read what is in the mix

Mixed nuts may contain raw, roasted, salted, spiced or sugar-coated ingredients. When planning a portion, look at the ingredients list and not just the name of the mix. Mixes containing dried fruit or sweetened products have a different flavour and nutritional profile from plain nuts.

A simple routine for variety

  • Choose two or three different plain products in your weekly shop.
  • Make up your mix day by day rather than preparing it in a large jar.
  • Balance salted products with plain ones to tone down the intensity.
  • Count the amount used at breakfast and in recipes as part of your daily total.
  • Use the portion and nutritional information on the packaging as your reference.

Seek personal advice in special circumstances

Nuts are among the common allergens. People with an allergy should avoid the product and any mixes that carry a risk of cross-contamination. Where there is a choking risk for children, special dietary requirements, chronic conditions or a diet prescribed by a doctor, the advice of a healthcare professional should be followed on portion size and product choice.

Lasting habits are built in small steps

You do not have to eat the same mix every day. Keep an eye on how quickly you get through them, pick plain options that suit your taste and buy only as much as you need. Portioning in advance, reading the label and storing the product correctly are three simple steps that make eating nuts a more mindful and regular habit.
